Neurophysiotherapy

Neurophysiotherapy focuses on neurological conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. These conditions can impact movement, balance, strength, coordination, and walking. Neurophysiotherapy uses targeted exercises, movement training, and rehabilitation strategies to help patients regain function, improve independence, and reduce the risk of falls or further complications.

At the Neurocentre of Eastern Ontario (NEO), neurophysiotherapy is designed to complement neurological care by helping patients translate diagnosis and treatment into meaningful improvements in everyday function and improving quality of life.

  • Stroke and Post-Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke can affect strength, coordination, balance, speech, and the ability to perform daily activities. Neurophysiotherapy plays an essential role in recovery by helping patients relearn movement patterns and regain functional independence. Therapy focuses on improving walking, restoring arm and hand function, enhancing balance, and reducing the risk of falls. Rehabilitation may also include gait training, task-specific exercises, and strategies to improve mobility and endurance.

    Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease commonly affects movement, posture, balance, and walking speed. Neurophysiotherapy helps patients maintain mobility and independence by focusing on posture correction, gait training, balance exercises, and movement training designed to improve mobility and coordination. Therapy can also help address freezing of gait, stiffness, and reduced arm swing, allowing patients to move more confidently and safely.

    Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy can cause numbness, weakness, reduced sensation in the feet, and balance problems. Neurophysiotherapy focuses on strengthening muscles, improving coordination, and enhancing balance to reduce fall risk. Therapy may also include gait retraining, sensory-based training, and exercises that help patients adapt safely to changes in sensation.

    Ataxia

Ataxia is characterized by poor coordination and unsteady movements that may affect walking, balance, and fine motor control. Neurophysiotherapy helps improve stability and coordination through targeted balance training, posture control exercises, and structured gait practice. The goal is to maximize safety, improve movement efficiency, and support independence in daily activities.

    Balance and Mobility Disorders

Balance problems can arise from neurological conditions, inner ear disorders, neuropathy, aging, or medication effects. Neurophysiotherapy focuses on improving stability, walking confidence, and fall prevention. Therapy may include balance training, strength exercises, vestibular-based techniques, and mobility training designed to improve safe movement at home and in the community.

  • The NEO Neurophysiotherapy Clinic focuses specifically on neurological conditions affecting movement, balance, and coordination. The clinic is designed to support patients with neurological diagnoses such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy, ataxia, and other balance or mobility disorders.

The clinic does not provide treatment for primary musculoskeletal conditions such as knee pain, hip pain, joint injuries, neck pain, low back pain, or sciatica. Patients seeking care for these types of conditions are encouraged to visit a general physiotherapy clinic that focuses on musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

  • Two types of appointments are available:

    Initial Neurophysiotherapy Assessment – $130

This initial visit includes a comprehensive neurological movement assessment, review of medical history, evaluation of balance, gait, strength, and coordination, and development of an individualized rehabilitation plan, customized according to your condition and goals.

    Follow-Up Therapy Session (30 minutes) – $90

Follow-up sessions focus on guided therapy, exercise progression, balance and gait training, and ongoing rehabilitation based on the treatment plan developed during the initial assessment.

Patients will receive a receipt that can be submitted to their insurance provider when applicable.

  • Neurophysiotherapy services at NEO are delivered in accordance with the professional and regulatory standards governing physiotherapy practice in Ontario. All physiotherapy assessments and treatmentsprograms are provided by a registered physiotherapist licensed to practice in Ontario and regulated by the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

Although the clinic operates within a neurology specialty environment, physiotherapy services are provided as an independent professional service, and physiotherapists maintain full responsibility for their clinical assessments, treatment planning, and professional decision-making.

Key regulatory principles guiding the operation of the neurophysiotherapy service include maintaining the independence of physiotherapy clinical judgment, ensuring clear identification of the physiotherapist as the treating provider, and avoiding any arrangements that may interfere with professional standards of care.

The clinic also complies with applicable privacy and health information protection requirements under Ontario law, ensuring that patient records, documentation, and communications are managed securely within the clinic’s electronic systems.

This structure allows the neurophysiotherapy service to function as part of a coordinated neurological care environment while maintaining the professional and regulatory requirements governing physiotherapy practice in Ontario.
